By taking the
reciprocal of how many seconds a single cycle takes (reciprocal of "seconds
per cycle" is "cycles per second"), the number of cycles occurring in a
given period of time such as a second or minute can be calculated.

For example, if
a cycle takes 1/50th of a second, the frequency is 50 cycles per second
(50 "Hertz"), or 3000 cycles per minute (3000 cpm or 3kcpm).
